PAC BELL AND OMNIPOINT OFFER PCS ROAMING ABILITY

SAN FRANCISCO-Personal communications services customers of Pacific Bell Mobile Services and Omnipoint Corp. in California and New York, respectively, will be able to access the services and convenience they receive in their home territories through roaming agreements announced by the two companies.

Customers will be able to use their own handsets and services while roaming, without needing prior authorization. Pac Bell won broadband licenses in the San Francisco and Los Angeles major trading areas. Omnipoint received a pioneer’s preference award for the New York MTA.

“There are lots of people traveling between California and New York who want an easy way to stay in touch with the home and the office,” said Lyn Daniels, president and chief executive officer of Pac Bell. “And we’re eager to work with other PCS operators to provide easy roaming access across the country.”

The two PCS licensees also will conduct a joint trial of Omnipoint’s new wireless technology, collaborate on network operations and help establish industry standards. Omnipoint’s PCS system was recently approved as a U.S. PCS standard, said the companies, and can be used as an adjunct or enhancement to any Global System for Mobile communications-based system. Both Pac Bell and Omnipoint will build their PCS networks with GSM-based infrastructure.
