Virgin Mobile USA Inc. has tapped buzzd to power an ad-supported, location-based entertainment offering from its home deck.
A New York-based startup, buzzd couples location-sensitive city guides with social-networking features allowing users to broadcast and share content from their phones. The Web-based service features content from partners including Citysearch, Time Out and Zagat, and lists events and venues from major cities in the United States, Europe and India.
Buzzd is among a number of startups that have pocketed venture capital this year as investors flood the location-aware community space. The new service is available at no charge on all Virgin Mobile USA devices via the mobile virtual network operator’s WAP deck.
“Our community has a healthy appetite for entertainment, fun and what’s happening around them,” said Ron Faris, director of brand development and partnerships for Virgin Mobile USA.
