India’s mobile industry ended the first half of the year with 851.7 million subscribers, with overall market penetration reaching 71.11%, according to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.
TRIA noted that the mobile segment posted 1.36% growth in June, with urban users increasing from 554.75 million customers to 562.12 million customers and rural subscriptions increasing from 285.53 million customers to 289.57 million customers. Urban penetration increased from 154.18% to 155.96%, while rural penetration increased from 34.13% to 34.58%.
Amongst the nation’s mobile operators, Bharti Airtel Ltd. was the largest carrier at the end of June with 19.86% of the market, followed by Reliance Communications Ltd. with 16.82% and Vodafone India at 16.62%. Those three operators also took a majority of net customer additions during June, with Bharti Airtel acquiring 18.58% of net customer additions, Reliance acquiring 18.44% and Vodafone India acquiring 18.34%.
