BlackBerry PlayBook to get Sprint Nextel 4G update this summer

.

The BlackBerry PlayBook isn’t even on shelves yet, but already the firm is talking about upgrades to it coming just a few months after launch – in Summer.

RCR caught up with RIM at the Game developer conference in San Francisco today and pumped the reps for details on release dates and pricing, to no avail – almost.

The reps did let on that the device would probably be landing on shelves within “weeks” (RIM has always said end of Q1, and that is a mere four weeks away) and that it would be getting an upgrade to Sprint’s 4G plus some other minor updates in Summer.

Does this mean PlayBook hopefuls should hold on to their pocketbooks that little while longer and buy one in Summer when the device is fully baked? We’re told by several sources that shouldn’t be a concern.

“RIM has always been really good at updating its software and squeezing the highest level of performance out of the hardware, making sure everything works fantastically together,” one source from a graphics IP firm told us. “Because they develop everything in-house, the hardware and software are built to complement each other and that just works. This isn’t a device that will be outdated come Summer, and any updates RIM makes, it will likely be an available software upgrade rolled out to all other customers too.”

By that time, we’re pretty sure the PlayBook will be running Android smoothly too!
