Death row inmate ‘Tookie’ Williams getting SMS support

LOS ANGELES-Supporters of a death-row inmate in California are using text messaging to urge Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to commute his death sentence.

Stanley “Tookie” Williams is scheduled to be executed Dec. 13. He has been on death row for nearly 25 years after being convicted in four murder cases. Williams is credited as a co-founder of the notorious Crips street gang.

Fab Finger Media Group set up the Text 4 Tookie campaign, which allows mobile phone users to send text messages to add their support to a petition calling for Williams’ sentence to be commuted to a life term. Daily petition updates are forwarded to the governor’s office.

Each text return costs 39 cents, said the company.

Fab Finger Media Group said it plans to use SMS technology for future social and civic causes.
