Symbian posts increasing OS shipments

LONDON-Symbian Ltd. said shipments of Symbian OS phones increased 131 percent during the third quarter to 8.54 million units compared with 3.7 million units during the same quarter last year.

The company said the worldwide installed base of Symbian OS phones stands at 48 million.

In addition, Symbian said 60 Symbian OS phone models are shipping through eight of its licensees, double the 30 models that were shipping as of last year’s third quarter. During the quarter, six new models started shipping from Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Electric Corp., Nokia Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.
