Tele2 expands Russian footprint

STOCKHOLM, Sweden-European telecommunications provider Tele2 AB added to its Russian mobile holdings with the acquisition of Russian mobile operator Lipetsk Mobile.

Lipetsk operates an AMPS/D-AMPS and limited GSM network in central Russia. Tele2 noted that 42 percent of the 1.24 million people in the region live in Lipetsk and that regional mobile penetration is around 50 percent.

“The acquisition of Lipetsk Mobile with its GSM license is another step in the expansion of Tele2 in Russia, following our successful GSM mobile launches in twelve regions,” said Lars-Johan Jarnheimer, chief executive officer of Tele2. “With the Lipetsk license, Tele2’s licensed footprint in Russia now covers a population of 34.5 million.”

Terms of the deal were not released.
