Sprint Nextel claims EV-DO network now covers more than 90 million pops

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.-Sprint Nextel Corp. claims its recently launched CDMA2000 1x EV-DO network is now available in 141 markets covering more than 90 million potential customers, including more than 250 airports. The carrier added that the high-speed wireless data network is scheduled to cover 150 million pops in more than 220 markets by early next year.

Sprint Nextel also said it plans to add a third EV-DO PC card from UTStarcom Inc. to its line-up later this month. Customers can access the EV-DO network using a Sierra Wireless Inc. or Novatel Wireless Inc. PC card; a Microsoft Corp. Windows Mobile 5.0-powered smart phone; or a pair of handsets from Samsung Electronic Co. Ltd. and Sanyo Electronic Co. Ltd.

Verizon Wireless claims its rival EV-DO network is available in 171 markets covering more than 140 million pops, including more than 68 airports.
