Toshiba confirms tablets and slates

Computer maker, Toshiba, has confirmed it will be bringing out tablets of its own to try and capture some of Apple’s market share pie.

Feeling confident after seeing sales skyrocket by 50% in the first quarter, Toshiba said it was preparing to launch various different portable options, including slates for the PC space and tablets for mobile.

The dual-screen slates would likely sport Microsoft’s Windows 7 OS while the more mobile 10-inch tablet offerings would run with Google’s Android, making for cheaper models than the more expensive Windows ones.

Toshiba is apparently not worried about the potential cannibalization of its higher end products, saying it sees the slate as being expansive to its offerings.

The firm is also working with content providers to provide media for the slate, while the Android tablet version will naturally have access to thousands of apps.

Market research outfit, In-Stat, says the market for tablets could grow to 50 million units by 2014, so it’s not that the likes of Toshiba, HP and Dell also want a piece of the action.

But whether or not PC giants are able to successfully tailor their products to an increasingly mobile and telco dominated space remains to be seen.
