Just like more developed countries, mobile operators in India are looking towards data services to offset falling voice revenues, according to a recent report from Juniper.
The report noted that operator billed data revenues in India will increase from $4 billion in 2010 to $10 billion in 2015. While the current mobile data segment is generating most of its revenues from music services, Juniper said it expects user generated content to generate the highest revenues by 2015.
“With operators following the app store concept and launching their own app stores, the mobile content sector is set for substantial development, meaning the amount of content available to consumers will rapidly multiply; hence increased consumption and revenue,” said Nitin Smitha, author of the report.
Smitha added that ongoing 3G deployments will also provide momentum for the mobile data segment, though high handset costs will somewhat limit the impact.
The report also found that the number of mobile customers in India will rise from 814 million customers this year to nearly 1.3 billion by 2015.
