Dial Page Inc.’s stockholders have approved a merger proposal and agreement with Nextel Communications Inc., Nextel announced. The Federal Communications Commission’s final approval on the merger is expected to be made in late January, Nextel said. The transaction is scheduled to close Jan. 31. Dial Page provides integrated wireless communications services in the Southeastern United States. Last June, the company began service on its digital mobile network operating in North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama, Nextel said.
SBC Communications Inc.’s subsidiary Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems announced an agreement authorizing Computer City, a division of Tandy Corp., to offer cellular service in 33 stores in SBMS’s service areas throughout the nation by the end of the year.
Pinpoint Communications Inc. announced it has begun operating its first commercial network for automatic vehicle location and two-way mobile data communications in Dallas. Pinpoint said the first of several customers of its network, a heating and air conditioning service firm, has started using the network as an initial commercial test. The network provides wireless automated location and two-way data communications services using a proprietary technology that allows Pinpoint to provide its services at a low cost, the company said.
U S West Cellular announced it has launched its Cellular Modem Link Service in Denver and Minneapolis. The service allows customers to use their laptop computers, cellular phones and cellular modems to access up-to-the-minute information from any type of data network.
Glenayre Technologies Inc. said it has installed its modular voice processing system for Chicago-based United States Cellular Corp. U.S. Cellular plans to provide enhanced voice messaging services such as voice mail, message waiting notification and access to online information databases to its subscribers in Gainesville, Fla., Glenayre said.
Microwave Power Devices Inc. said it has been awarded a $10 million contract to supply single-channel Code Division Multiple Access amplifiers to AT&T Network Systems’ base stations. Microwave Power Devices said the contract will begin immediately, and is expected to be completed by the start of the third quarter.
Chadmoore Wireless Group Inc. announced it has accelerated construction of its specialized mobile radio stations in its primary service area throughout the southeastern United States. The announcement follows the Federal Communications Commission denying Chadmoore permission to implement its business plan during a three-year period, Chadmoore said. Had the request been granted, Chadmoore would have been given three years to construct its stations.
