GTE AND BANM TO PROVIDE CDPD IN EACH OTHER’S AREA

ATLANTA-GTE Mobilnet and Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile announced they will offer Cellular Digital Packet Data services to customers in each other’s markets.

GTE said the services will be important to people and companies that conduct business on a national scale. For example, employees of a company based in Houston, a GTE market, with offices in New York, a BANM market, can use CDPD service in Texas and New York at the same rates, receive one bill for service and have one point of contact for customer service.

“This agreement, our similar agreement with Ameritech and GTE Mobilnet’s recently announced aggressive service pricing demonstrates significant progress toward delivering on the promise of affordable, nationwide CDPD service,” said Jay Sheth, GTE Mobilnet’s director of business market planning. “The capabilities provided by this agreement are as important to the advancement of wireless data service as roaming has been to cellular voice users. It represents the next major step toward national CDPD solutions.”

GTE and BANM hold licenses covering most major metropolitan areas in 18 states and the District of Columbia.

Each carrier will set their own rates for service. To make billing easier, customers will receive a single bill from their home service provider for all of their CDPD use, regardless of where they use the service. Both companies are members of the CDPD Forum Inc.
