ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Motorola Inc.’s Cellular Infrastructure Group announced it has deployed its wireless local loop network in Benin, Africa, providing phone service for the first time to many remote customers.
The network uses a narrowband Advanced Mobile Phone Service radio interface and was initially deployed as a trial last June. Benin’s Office Des Postes et Telecommunications has purchased the system to provide commercial service to subscribers in Cotonou, Benin’s largest city.
“With the rapid deployment and cost-effective implementation, our fixed wireless phone system has become the solution of choice in developing regions such as Africa where there is a large pent-up demand for phone service,” said Pertti Johansson, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola’s International Cellular Infrastructure Division.
