IRVING, Texas-NEC America announced its intent to introduce its first personal Air Communications Technology paging device for mass market development in 1997.
The pACT protocol is a new and advanced two-way messaging standard with an Internet protocol open architecture for narrowband personal communications services. NEC said its pACT pager is expected to be as small and portable as existing alphanumeric pagers in use.
The company said it has identified strong market interest from carriers who have already decided to deploy pACT as well as other service providers who are currently reviewing their two-way protocol options. NEC said it plans to distribute its initial product through pACT carriers in the second quarter of 1997.
“Due to its Internet protocol-based open architecture, pACT represents one of the most prolific application-oriented protocols for the emerging NPCS market,” said Ted Pielemeier of NEC America’s Wireless Communications Division. The high capacity capabilities of pACT coupled with its attractive cost to deploy, marketability and variety of data and voice applications strongly indicate pACT will be adopted by many prominent paging carriers.
