CLINTON THREATENS KOREAN SANCTIONS

The Clinton administration on Friday threatened to impose trade sanctions on Korea for blocking access to that country’s telecommunications market.

“I do not intend to use the full one-year negotiating period provided by the 1988 (Omnibus trade and Competitiveness) Act,” said Charlene Barshefsky, U.S. trade representative. “Absent an agreement, the administration will pursue vigorously all options available under U.S. trade law.”

International competition doesn’t begin in Korea until 1998. The PCS equipment market alone in Korea could be worth $1.7 billion by 2002.
