LUCENT CLAIMS NEW DSP IS FASTEST CHIP

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, N.J.-The Microelectronics Group of Lucent Technologies Inc. announced it is shipping to wireless equipment manufacturers what it claims is the world’s fastest digital signal processor.

The DSP 1620 operates at 120 million instructions per second with a 3 volt power supply, nearly twice as fast as competing products, the company said.

The chip is targeted for use in Global System for Mobile communications, Time Division Multiple Access, Code Division Multiple Access and Personal Digital Cellular wireless infrastructure equipment.

The DSP incorporates 32K x 16 Dual Port Static Random Access Memory, enough to hold all the coding and data for wireless infrastructure applications. The combination of speed and on-chip SRAM will enable wireless equipment manufacturers to reduce the number of DSPs needed for base stations and base-station controllers by a factor of three or more, while eliminating the need for external SRAM, the company said.

The DSP, which is the latest member of Lucent’s DSP 1600 family, was designed by Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies’ research and development arm.
