LUCENT AND IBN PARTNER IN DATA NETWORKING EFFORT

MURRAY HILL, N.J.-Lucent Technologies and IBM Corp. announced they will collaborate to grow the market for wireless data networking equipment, applications and services.

Specifically, the companies said they will work together to stimulate the growth of business solutions that take advantage of Cellular Digital Packet Data technology.

“We’re pleased to team with Lucent Technologies in this common effort to develop end-to-end solutions that help our customers meet their mobile and wireless needs,” said Robert Amezcua, IBM’s vice president of worldwide mobile solutions.

“The open platforms available with Lucent’s wireless infrastructure equipment, surrounded by a broad complement of IBM services, are crucial to the development of mobile computing applications,” he added.

“We both realize that network service providers are an integral part of this equation,” said Bob Sellinger, director of Lucent’s wireless infrastructure product marketing.

IBM and Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent are initially demonstrating an application based on Lotus Notes. Lotus Notes is a groupware software package that allows people to collaborate over long distances by sharing data across most networks, operating systems, databases and applications.
