FORT WORTH, Texas-Uniden American Corp., the North American subsidiary of Uniden Corp., announced the formation of its Internet Products Division designed to facilitate the convergence of wireless communications with the Internet. By pooling its technology, manufacturing and distribution resources, the company said it hopes to introduce the first generation of Internet products by January 1997.
Bringing existing technology to the Internet products market quickly will be a team effort, said Robert Gibbs, president of Uniden American Corp. “No one company can do it all. You must have manufacturers, service providers and sales and marketing support to develop this new market niche.”
Gregory Jones, general manager of the Internet Products Division, will head the project. The company said it hopes to include consumer-oriented products as well as Internet appliances for the mobile professional.
“Recent market research indicates there is a pent-up demand for low-cost, non-technical Internet appliances that will enable both consumers and mobile professionals to enjoy the information and connectivity benefits of the web without owning or being anchored to a computer,” said Jones.
