ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Motorola Inc.’s Asia/Pacific Cellular Infrastructure Group announced it will assist the Tianjin Posts & Telecommunications Administration in the expansion of the Global System for Mobile Communications network in Tianjin, China, under a multimillion dollar contract.
Plans call for the expansion, scheduled to be completed in mid-1997, to double the number of subscribers the network can support to 160,000.
Motorola said it will install its M-Cell family of base stations, including the M-Cell 2, M-Cell 6 and the M-Cell micro.
Tianjin PTA is a government-owned enterprise that operates the network for the city. Tianjin is a major industrial city with nine million people located on the eastern coast of China. The city’s GSM network was installed in 1994 and has been expanded in phases. Last year, Tianjin PTA had a business volume totaling $216 million, a 44 percent increase when compared with business volume the previous year.
To date, Motorola said it has delivered GSM networks in 13 provinces and municipalities in China. Motorola has been awarded public cellular network contracts in more than 230 Chinese cities, covering a population of more than 1 billion people.
