BELLSOUTH LAUNCHES A PREPAID PROGRAM IN SOUTHERN FLORIDA

ATLANTA-BellSouth Cellular Corp. debuted its prepaid cellular program in its BellSouth Mobility southern Florida market.

Because airtime is paid in advance, the service is ideal for customers who are budget conscious, the company said.

Customers can either purchase a new phone, or use a phone that is not linked to a BellSouth cellular contract.

A $30 activation fee is assessed, and customers receive a $10 calling card. Customers are reminded when their time is almost depleted and have several options for replenishing their time. Free emergency calls are included.

Ameritech’s billing to be consolidated

CHICAGO-Some Ameritech Corp. customers in Illinois and Michigan will soon receive a single bill for their cellular, paging, local and long distance bills. The bill will include a cover page with total charges due, followed by a breakdown for each service.

The launch follows a two-year trial. The company plans to offer the service to customers in Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana early next year.
