ITRON WILL PROVIDE AUTO METER READING:

SPOKANE, Wash.-Itron Inc. signed a contract with Southeastern Michigan Gas Enterprises to provide a wireless automatic meter reading system to the Battle Creek Gas Co., a Southeastern subsidiary. The contract is valued at $4.3 million.

Initially, the system will read more than 70,000 gas meters, but that number will grow to 230,000 Michigan customers by the year 1999, the company said. Also included in the project is handheld Off-site Meter Reading equipment to read meters in areas that are difficult to access.

Installation will begin this month, with completion scheduled for May of next year.

“The Itron system will allow us to lower operating costs while dramatically improving customer services,” said William Johnson, Southeastern’s president and chief executive officer.
