Arch Communications Group Inc. named Carol E. Burns vice president of human resources. Burns has been director of human resources since she started with the company in July 1995. Before joining Arch, Burns was director of human resources at the Au Bon Pain restaurant chain. She will report to Arch Chairman and Chief Executive Officer C. Edward Baker, Jr. in her new position.

Jerry Rhodes joined American Portable Telecom Inc. as vice president of marketing and sales. The company said Rhodes will spearhead the introduction of APT’s personal communications services systems in six major U.S. markets by early 1997 and will direct all national sales and marketing initiatives related to the company’s new digital wireless service. Rhodes previously was vice president of marketing at Sprint Corp.’s long-distance division.

WinStar Communications Inc. has chosen Robert McGuire as president and chief operating officer of WinStar Wireless Inc., its carrier wholesale sales division. WinStar said McGuire joined the division in May as senior vice president of sales and operations. Before joining WinStar, he was vice president of the Eastern sales region for Merck-Medco Managed Care Inc. McGuire will be based at the WinStar Wireless headquarters in Tysons Corner, Va.

Nigel Pestell has been named vice president of international acquisitions and development at Castle Tower Corp. Pestell spent 16 years in various positions with Motorola Inc. before joining Castle in his new position. Most recently he was a marketing and product manager with Motorola Inc.’s Advanced Messaging Group.

Wacom Products Inc. appointed Ken R. Lawler sales manager. He formerly was vice president of Unipage Inc. and prior to that was Eastern sales manager for NEC Corp. cellular and paging products. He also has served in management positions with firms including Mobile Communications Corp. of America, Comquip Inc. and Contact New Mexico/ Tel New Mexico.

Mitsubishi Wireless Communications Inc. hired Tony Sellers as product planner for its cellular and personal communications services product lines. The company said he will be analyzing market trends to identify new product opportunities and will work closely with the engineering department to ensure products are developed on time and to specifications. Sellers previously was employed by BellSouth Corp. as a corporate planning consultant.

Scot Nelson was hired as general manager of Western Communications. Nelson replaces Bob Hoting who retired from the company after 28 years of service. Nelson’s background includes 10 years at Motorola Inc. as regional sales manager. The company said he has extensive experience in sales management and a comprehensive knowledge of radio systems design.

Lee Newman was named general manager at Alltel Communications Inc., the newly formed subsidiary of Alltel Corp. The company said the subsidiary will provide a comprehensive package of communications services in the greater Charlotte, N.C., area. Prior to his appointment, Newman served as general manager of Alltel Mobile’s Albany, Ga., market since 1992.

Metawave Communications announced Harold F. Carey joined the company as vice president of engineering services. Carey will head Metawave’s worldwide engineering services groups, providing installation, training, field service and consulting support for the company’s multibeam, antenna product line. He comes to the company from Local Area Telecommunications, a wireless service provider, where he served as senior vice president and general manager for more than eight years. In that position he was responsible for testing and evaluation of personal communications services systems in support of the company’s experimental licenses, developing engineering standards for microwave relocation experiments and expanding the company’s engineering services.

Celcore Inc. added two members to it Product Line Management Group. Peter Roach was appointed assistant vice president of business strategy and development with responsibilities for product line management and strategic planning. Roach was previously director of wireless strategy and new products for BellSouth Wireless. Jonas Twingler was named director of GSM product management. He will lead the company’s Global System for Mobile communications product management team. Twingler was previously with Telia Mobitel AB of Sweden, a Global System for Mobile communications cellular service provider.

Susan Sheridan has been named senior vice president of marketing and organizational strategy for Systems & Computer Technology Corp. She will be responsible for corporate marketing and human resources. Sheridan has been with SCT for 12 years and was most recently vice president of human resources and organizational strategy. Prior to that, she spent 10 years in various marketing roles with the company.

Rogers Communications Inc. has appointed Alan Horn vice president of finance and chief financial officer. Horn has been acting chief financial officer for the past two months since the resignation of Graham Savage. Horn also is a member of the board of directors of a number of private public companies including Newbridge Networks Corp., ATI Technologies Inc. and Camvec Corp.
