BELLSOUTH MOBILITY OFFERS TEXT SERVICE

ATLANTA-BellSouth Mobility Inc. launched its TextMessaging service last month. The service allows short messages to be sent from a personal computer to a digital cellular customer with no airtime charges to the recipient, the company said.

The sender can forward a text or alphanumeric message to up to 500 digital cellular customers. The customer can read the message when inside the digital coverage area, which currently covers the areas inside the Interstate 285 perimeter in Georgia. BellSouth Mobility plans to expand the coverage area to include the entire north Georgia area.

During the rollout, BellSouth Mobility is accommodating 80 character messages, but during the first quarter of this year the company said it should be transmitting messages of up to 160 characters.

The company is offering a limited time price of $13 per month for the basic service including unlimited text or numeric messages. Beginning in February, the numeric service will cost $10 for up to 300 numeric messages and 10 cents for each additional message. Text messaging will be $13 per month for up to 300 messages and 20 cents for each additional message.
