STOCKHOLM, Sweden-L.M. Ericsson and Lucent Technologies Inc. were among the vendors selected by NTT DoCoMo of Japan to develop an experimental “third generation” wireless communications system capable of delivering high-speed multimedia services.
The system will provide services including full-motion video, video conferencing and Internet access. The 5 megahertz Wideband Code Division Multiple Access technology will support initial data transfer rates of 384 kilobits per second and eventually will handle up to 2 Mbps, Ericsson said.
The companies said they plan to install the first systems by late 1997, and they hope to commercially deploy the system by 2000.
