CLEARNET INKS DEAL FOR LIBRARY SITES

OTTAWA-Clearnet Communications Inc. reached an agreement with the Canadian Library Association to provide high-speed Internet access to certain local libraries in exchange for the right to locate cell sites on library rooftops.

The cell sites are part of Clearnet’s enhanced specialized mobile radio and personal communications services networks. Clearnet said it will offer either Internet access over its T1 lines or payment for the right to locate on rooftops that fit into its buildout plan. Eventually, Clearnet said, it will offer a wireless microwave radio Internet connection to the libraries.

“We were intrigued when presented with the Clearnet proposal, because we had never appreciated that the roofs of our libraries could be such valuable resources,” said Karen Harrison, president of the association.
