HELSINKI, Finland-Nokia Corp. reported net sales for the first quarter ended March 31 of $2.2 billion, 43 percent more than first quarter 1996 net sales of $1.6 billion. Net profit for the quarter totaled $212.5 million, or 75 cents per share, compared with net profit of $64.2 million, or 23 cents per share, for the same period a year ago.
Nokia Telecommunications saw 34 percent growth in sales to $739 million from sales of $549.8 million during the first quarter last year. Nokia Mobile Phones sales reached $1.2 billion, 58 percent more than net sales of $770 million for the same period a year ago.
