TORONTO-Qualcomm Inc. said it signed an 18-month contract to supply Code Division Multiple Access digital handsets to Bell Mobility, a Canadian wireless services provider. Qualcomm values the agreement at $70 million.
The agreement includes Qualcomm’s QCP-2700, a digital dual-band, dual-mode phone. Bell Mobility will use the phones when it launches its personal communications services network later this year.
Bell Mobility’s CDMA system is undergoing market trials in the Ottawa-Hull area. Customer trials also will take place in Toronto and Montreal this summer.
Randall Reynolds, senior vice president of market and network development for Bell Mobility, said the contract replaces a $125 million, 36-month arrangement with Oki telecom Inc., because the company felt product availability through Qualcomm was more consistent with its service launch schedule.
