POWERTEL LAUNCHES PCS IN GAINESVILLE

WEST POINT, Ga.-Personal communications services provider Powertel Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of InterCel Inc., launched commercial PCS service last week in Gainesville, Fla.

Allen Smith, president and chief executive officer of Powertel, said the Gainesville launch completed the company’s buildout in all of its major Florida markets and highways connecting the cities.

Powertel has launched in 17 markets, including Gainesville. The company’s initial buildout of 23 markets in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee will be completed soon, added Smith.

“We expect to complete Powertel’s initial buildout by launching the Atlanta area and cities of Augusta, Columbus, Macon and Savannah, Ga., by the end of the year,” said Smith.

“With PCS coverage in 23 cities, including the major connecting highways, Powertel expects to be able to offer PCS services to more than 60 percent of the population in these areas by the end of the year.”

Powertel has one retail location to serve the Gainesville area and offers services and handsets through five authorized Powertel agents and three mass merchants.
