WEST POINT, Ga.-Intercel Inc. said effective July 1 it will change its corporate name to Powertel Inc., the name used for its personal communications services networks.
The company’s stock also will trade under a new stock symbol, PTEL. The name change was approved by stockholders at the company’s annual meeting last month.
“The Powertel name captures the spirit of our new corporate focus in launching and developing one of the largest PCS networks in the Southeast, and we believe the corporate name change is another positive step in building awareness for the company’s `Powertel’ brand name,” said Allen E. Smith, president and chief executive officer of the company. “We have invested significant capital in establishing the Powertel brand name through advertising and marketing programs and anticipate our corporate name change will further increase our visibility among both consumers and investors.”
Powertel’s networks use Global System for Mobile communications technology. The company has PCS licenses in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Florida.
