HELSINKI, Finland-Nokia Corp. and the Finnish Ministry of the Interior signed an agreement in which Nokia will supply a nationwide digital communications network for police, emergency and rescue services and other government users throughout the country.
Deliveries of the Terrestrial Trunked Radio infrastructure equipment, including Nokia switches, base stations, dispatcher workstations and terminals for the initial network phase, will begin early next year, Nokia said.
“This network will take care of service provision for the most important security and emergency services in Finland,” Minister of the Interior Jan-Erik Enestam said. “Using the TETRA system, we have a wide range of reliable and versatile services, which existing commercial radio systems cannot provide. The nature of the emergency services means that we need a clear communication channel at all times, and this is exactly what we have with this network.”
The TETRA standard is the only open digital trunked radio standard recognized by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute to meet the needs of professional mobile radio users, said Nokia. A large group of European user and manufacturer organizations participated in the definition of the standard.
