NORTEL, PHILIPPINE SATELLITE FIRM TEAM TO BUILD TELECOM GATEWAY

OTTAWA-Northern Telecom Singapore Pte. Ltd., the Philippines Communications Satellite Corp. and its subsidiary, CALL Telecoms, have signed a memorandum of understanding to roll out an international gateway facility, local exchange carrier network and a personal communications services mobile network in the Philippines.

Philcomsat leases satellite services to international carriers, which then deliver global telecommunications services to end users. The company is embarking on what its president, Honorio Poblador III, described as an “aggressive strategic entry into different business lines for the coming millennium,” including wireline and wireless telecommunications services.

The Nortel/Philcomsat MoU was formalized when president of the Republic of the Philippines, Fidel V. Ramos, visited Canada.

“Nortel is delighted to be signing this MoU with Philcomsat and CALL Telecoms,” said George Maclean, vice president of public carrier and broadband networks, Nortel Asia South Pacific. “We are jointly committed to the deployment of state-of-the-art telecommunications networks in the Philippines-to raise the country’s per capita teledensity and deliver more competitive advantage to the Filipino business community in the increasingly information-based global economy.”

Northern Telecom Singapore is a business unit of Canada-based Northern Telecom Ltd.
