NEW YORK-WinStar Communications Inc. announced it has acquired or signed agreements to acquire 17 additional 38 GHz licenses covering 33 channels in 13 metropolitan markets across the United States.
The licensed coverage area represents about 75 million new channel pops, the company said, increasing WinStar’s total licensed coverage area to more than 875 million pops.
The new bandwidth now amounts to 1,000 MHz in Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Tampa, Fla.; 900 MHz in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Houston, New York and Spokane, Wash.; 800 MHz in Buffalo, N.Y., Dallas and Seattle; 600 MHz in Boston; and 400 MHz in Nashville, Tenn.
Winstar filed for 11 of the new licenses in 1994, which the Federal Communication Commission recently approved. The other six were acquired from other companies, subject to FCC approval.
