KANSAS CITY, United States-Sprint Spectrum L.P., Lucent Technologies Inc., Motorola Inc.’s Cellular Infrastructure Group, Northern Telecom Inc. and Qualcomm Inc. announced plans to jointly develop third-generation wireless systems based on the evolution of code division multiple access (CMDA) technology.
The companies’ 3G technology goals include backward compatibility with today’s cdmaOne technology, increased data rates and use of existing licensed personal communications services (PCS) spectrum. “Our goal is to trial this technology no later than 2000 and quickly move to commercial deployment,” stated Al Kurtze, Sprint PCS’ chief operating officer.
