SPYGLASS, FUJITSU JOIN WAP FORUM

ATLANTA-Spyglass Inc. and Fujitsu Software Corp. both have joined the Wireless Application Protocol Forum, the companies announced at CTIA’s Wireless 98 trade show.

Founded by L.M. Ericsson, Motorola Inc., Nokia Corp. and Unwired Planet Inc., WAP was formed to create a network-independent, global wireless protocol that will enable differing wireless networks access to various wireless data services, such as e-mail, Internet push technology and text-based websites. Supporters believe that establishing interoperability is necessary for wireless data applications to achieve mass-acceptance.

Spyglass provides strategic Internet consulting designed to identify business and technology issues facing wireless hardware and service providers, the company said.

Fujitsu Software is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fujitsu Ltd., focusing on technology markets such as Internet/intranet groupware, network management, foreign language translation and programming languages. The company just introduced a server software solution called ByeDesk Link, designed specifically to support WAP.

The WAP Forum has a draft of its global wireless protocol specification posted on its website and is seeking comment. It hopes to implement the specification later this year.
