Metrocall Inc. is conducting technical and market trials of Omni-Voice Technologies Inc.’s digital voice paging technology, according to OmniVoice. The OmniVoice platform allows compressed voice messages to be sent over FLEX paging networks, along with text and data. The company also is working on providing a similar ReFLEX solution. OmniVoice formerly was named NDC Voice Corp.

Motorola Inc. announced that Paging Inc. is installing a high-speed FLEX digital paging network throughout its territory of West Virginia, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and areas of Tennessee. Cellular One, the exclusive reseller of Paging Inc.’s services, is opening several stores throughout West Virginia to accommodate the expected growth the new network is hoped to build.

Triton PCS Inc. announced it completed the acquisition of the Myrtle Beach, S.C., cellular operation from Vanguard Cellular Systems Inc. for $160 million in cash. The acquisition gives Triton about 250,000 more potential subscribers, said the company.

Bell Atlantic Mobile said customers in the Buncombe and Madison counties of North Carolina have become part of its SuperSystem, which means they can make calls from a 36,000-square mile area in North Carolina, South Carolina and northeast Georgia at their home airtime rates. The service expansion follows a recent acquisition by BAM of the Asherville metropolitan service area from GTE Wireless Inc., previously marketed under the Cellular One brand name. The two-county area is adjacent to BAM’s rural service areas NC-1, NC-2 and NC-4.

Advanced Radio Telecom and Lucent Technologies Inc. entered into a definitive purchase agreement for Lucent to design, engineer and construct a nationwide fixed wireless broadband packet-switched data network for ART. The companies previously announced a letter of intent to do so. ART is testing its asynchronous transfer mode broadband data network and providing service to several beta customers in Bellevue, Wash., and plans to launch commercial service next month in Seattle, and by the end of the year in Portland, Ore., and Phoenix.
