ALLENTOWN, Pa.-Lucent Technologies Inc.’s Microelectronics Group introduced flash-memory technology that can be used in digital signal processors operating at up to 80 million instructions per second.
Lucent’s FlashDSP can be used for manufacturing cellular phones, pagers, modems and other products in high or low volumes, the company said.
Flash replaces Read Only Memory as the internal memory that holds the software within a DSP chip, running at 12.5 nanoseconds using 3.3 volts of power supply.
Reprogramming of DSP chips can be done in the field via software upgrades, and Flash also allows manufacturers to add new features and functions to DSPs even after the products are in consumers’ hands, said Lucent.
