MALAYSIA CONSIDERS LIMITING TECHNOLOGY FOR SMR NETWORKS

WASHINGTON-International Mobile Telecommunications Association President Alan Shark urged Malaysian telecommunications officials to adopt a flexible approach in wireless equipment standard requirements instead of restricting the types of technologies that can be used.

Jabatan Telekom Malaysia, the telecom regulatory body in Malaysia, is considering restricting the use of technology because the analog networks there are proprietary systems from multiple vendors and do not interconnect. JTM aims to transition smoothly all analog trunked radio systems to digital networks by 2005, said IMTA.

Shark emphasized that trunked radio services are different from cellular services and should be regulated differently.
