AVANTGO, PUMA TO DEVELOP ONE-SERVER CONNECTIVITY ARCHITECTURE

SANTA CLARA, Calif.-AvantGo Inc. and Puma Technology Inc. announced plans to jointly deliver a wireless data initiative they hope will result in open and uniform connection from enterprise information and applications to Palm Computing, Windows CE and other mobile computer and communications devices.

The Mobile Application Link development platform, as the initiative is called, will use AvantGo’s open-source code shaped by Puma’s small device and enterprise application synchronization services. The idea is to create one-server connectivity architecture for all applications by providing an application programmers interface to establish an easy connection between handheld or smart phone data and information on corporate applications and databases.

According to the two companies, the Mobile Application Link initiative will provide open source codes, documentation and APIs developers and vendors can use to develop a “network conduit” from the device to the server application. Developers then can incorporate the MAL code and deliver it as a complete integrated product.

“Customers and integrators want a single handheld connectivity solution,” said Keith Kanneg, director of software marketing at Symbol Technologies, a software applications developer.
