SUMMARY OF NTTI’S RECENT ODA PROJECTS:

Cambodia: NTT International Corp. (NTTI) promoted the telecom network upgrade plan in Phnom Penh between August 1995 and March 1998, using grant assistance from the Japanese government. The grant money went to Cambodia’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.

NTTI was involved in the entire phase of the project as a consultant. First a detailed system design was determined, including new telephone exchange offices; switching, transmission and power supply systems; and subscriber cables. NTTI helped prepare a bidding specification, evaluate proposals and conclude agreements with contractors.

The project included constructing two telephone exchange offices and additional radio subscriber systems.

Western Samoa: NTTI promoted a local telephone network infrastructure program using a grant from Japan, with the grant money given to Western Samoa’s Posts and Telecommunications Department.

The project built four radio base stations, 16 radio broadcast stations and 43 radio terminal offices. In addition, workers installed 250 telephones in 86 villages and connected them to existing switching systems via a radio digital subscriber system.

NTTI said the new system should contribute greatly to revitalizing local towns that previously relied on postal services and telegrams for communications.

Zimbabwe: NTTI promoted a radio transmission route expansion plan using yen loans. NTTI conducted a feasibility study to get an overall picture of the situation and started consulting over a three-year period starting in August 1995.

Uzbekistan: NTTI promoted a local telecom network expansion plan funded by yen loans between February 1996 and January 1999. The NTTI was involved in preparing bid specifications, selecting contractors, assisting with agreements between Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Communications and contractors, and supervising construction work.

This was the first project NTTI has undertaken in Central Asia.
