Chartered, Ericsson to develop technologies

SINGAPORE -Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing and L.M. Ericsson announced they jointly plan to develop advanced wireless communications technologies. The technologies, radio frequency CMOS and BiCMOS, will support a range of wireless products, including Bluetooth applications.

Both technologies developed will be based on and integrated into Chartered’s advanced baseline CMOS manufacturing process. Volume production for RF CMOS process technologies is expected in first-quarter 2001, with BiCMOS production beginning in third-quarter 2001.

RF CMOS provides a solution for cost-sensitive applications, and BiCMOS offers integration of high-performance microelectronics for wireless systems.

The companies said they will develop the RF CMOS processes in Chartered’s Singapore facilities and the BiCMOS processes at Ericsson’s Swedish facilities.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
