NEW ORLEANS-Lucent Technologies Inc. has been relatively quiet about its plans for the wireless Internet, but last week it announced a number of initiatives to propel itself into this arena.
Lucent, Sun Microsystems and iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions, a Sun-Netscape Alliance, released an end-to-end solution enabling mobile workers to access secure corporate intranets and e-mail systems in or out of the office from mobile or landline phones.
Lucent is teaming up with Yahoo! Inc. to demonstrate how instant messages sent via Yahoo! Messenger can be received and transmitted on wireless end-user devices over Wireless Application Protocol browser-equipped phones.
Strategy.com, a Personal Intelligence Network from Microstrategy Inc., and Lucent formed a strategic partnership to develop applications and technologies for the next generation of mobile wireless services that will deliver highly personalized, location-specific content to wireless customers.
Lucent and Sharp Corp., hoping to spur the availability of third-generation applications devices, are collaborating on new wireless multimedia solutions and services for the Code Division Multiple Access market in the United States.
And in a solo project, Lucent is launching its new ORINOCO high-speed wireless Internet access and networking system with products designed to provide secure, high-speed Internet access in public hot spots like universities, office complexes and airports.
