NEW YORK-Bell Atlantic Corp. increased adjusted net income for the first quarter by 10 percent to $1.3 billion from $1.2 billion in the first quarter of 1999.
The company also reported adjusted earnings per diluted share rose to 80 cents per share in this year’s first quarter, from 73 cents per share in 1999.
The company’s wireless group ended the first quarter with 12.7 million global wireless subscribers, an increase of 39.7 percent compared with the first quarter of 1999. First-quarter customer additions totaled 727,000, 36.7 percent more than in the first quarter of 1999.
Bell Atlantic Mobile, Vodafone AirTouch plc, PrimeCo Personal Communications and certain properties of Alltel Corp. merged during the first quarter, forming Verizon Wireless. The new company will provide nationwide wireless services covering more than 24 million customers.
