MANASSAS, Va.-Toshiba Corp. and SanDisk Corp. signed an agreement to create a new semiconductor company, FlashVision L.L.C., to produce advanced flash memory using fabrication space at Dominion Semiconductor in Manassas, Va.
Under the strategic joint venture, the companies plan to spend approximately $700 million to equip the existing facility, with Dominion expecting to hire an additional 600 workers for production, which is set to start in the second half of 2001.
Toshiba and SanDisk will each get 50 percent of Dominion’s flash memory production and will separately market and sell products to their respective customers.
The company’s noted that the NAND memory wafers primarily will be used to manufacture flash memory cards for use in future generations of cell phones, as well as digital cameras and digital music players.
