Schwab launches PocketBroker

NEW YORK-Charles Schwab & Co. Inc., San Francisco, launched its PocketBroker wireless service in the United States, developed in an alliance with Aether Systems Inc.

The service includes access to real-time quotes, market summaries, news headlines, equities trading and confirmation, order status, account balances and positions, e-mail alerts, complete news stories and securities “watch” lists.

PocketBroker is available now on the Palm operating system but will be offered on devices using other platforms, including Research In Motion two-way pagers and Internet-enabled mobile phones, Schwab said.

The brokerage firm debuted PocketBroker in Canada last fall and plans to introduce it during the next six months in other countries, including Hong Kong, Japan and the United Kingdom.

“We recognize that the convergence of Internet and wireless technologies will play a major role in the delivery of financial services, particularly in markets outside the United States,” said Dawn Lepore, vice chairman and chief information officer of Charles Schwab.
