Doctor sues over tumor

BALTIMORE-Maryland doctor Chris Newman, 41, filed an $800 million lawsuit in Baltimore City Circuit Court claiming his wireless phone caused a malignant tumor behind his right ear.

The tumor was discovered in March 1998.

The lawsuit, first reported by Jeffrey Silva in the July 31 issue of RCR, was filed against Motorola Inc., Verizon Communications, Bell Atlantic Corp., Bell Atlantic Mobile Inc., Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems Inc., Washington/Baltimore Cellular Ltd., SBC Communications Inc., the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association and the Telecommunications Industry Association.

Newman is seeking $100 million in compensatory damages and $700 million in punitive damages.
