TORONTO-Research In Motion Ltd. announced it will purchase airtime and services from Microcell Connexions Inc. to offer Canadian customers wireless data services based on GPRS technology over Microcell’s GSM-based network.
“RIM is well poised to develop leading GPRS-based solutions,” said Jim Balsillie, RIM’s chairman and co-chief executive officer. “We have been working closely with Microcell to conduct GPRS technical trials, and we are pleased with our joint progress.”
RIM also announced it plans to resell Motient Corp.’s network services in conjunction with its BlackBerry wireless e-mail solution through its distribution channels under a new deal between the two companies.
RIM said it expects the move to bring about 50,000 new customers to the Motient network over the next year.
