BEIJING—At the end of last year, Shanghai Mobile, China Mobile’s subsidiary in the East-China metropolis of Shanghai, had 2.83 million subscribers and a network capacity of 3 million. The company wants to increase capacity to 9 million by year end and double the number of base stations to 2,000 at a cost of CNY600 million (US$72.6 million).
In mid-July, capacity already reached 6.4 million. The scale of capacity increase in the first half of the year equaled construction in the past 13 years. The company also solved connection problems in more than 95 percent of the 600 high rises in the city.
Through network optimization, Shanghai Mobile aims to reach a call connection rate of more than 99.5 percent by the end of the year.
