WELLINGTON, New Zealand—Econet Wireless New Zealand, a subsidiary of Zimbabwe-based Econet Wireless, said it will enter New Zealand’s duopoly mobile market. Econet Wireless formed a partnership with New Zealand company Hautaki, which holds third-generation spectrum.
Hautaki has given Econet Wireless New Zealand access to the 3G spectrum in exchange for a 30-percent shareholding of the new company. The spectrum was set aside by the government for indigenous Maori.
New Zealand currently has two wireless carriers—Telecom New Zealand and Vodafone New Zealand. Clear Communications, owned by British Telecommunications, plc, and Telstra Saturn also purchased 3G spectrum in an auction that ended in January.
