BEIJING—Ericsson is to deliver a Mobitex mobile Internet network to the Sky Networks Communication Group to serve 500,000 subscribers in Beijing and northern China. The network is expected to be in service early next year and initially deliver messages and stock trading information.
The network uses the 800 MHz band. It will be the world’s second-largest Mobitex network, following one operated by Cingular Interactive in the United States.
According to Sky Networks Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Chen Yuanming, the Mobitex system allows the company to bring wireless data and messaging to a large number of users quickly and cost efficiently.
The headquarters of the Sky Networks Communication Group are located in Beijing. The company has around 1,800 employees.
