TD-SCDMA joint venture in the works

BEIJING—China’s Datang Technology, China Electronics Corporation Wireless (CECW) and the Dutch firm Philips Semiconductors have agreed to form a joint venture to design and license core technology for TD-SCDMA mobile phones, including platform design, chipsets and software, China’s Business Weekly reported in its 9 October edition.

Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA) is a third-generation (3G) mobile-phone standard co-developed by Datang and Germany’s Siemens.

Datang would provide its TD-SCDMA technology, Philips Semiconductor would supply the chipsets and CECW would offer software and terminal test technology.

According to Li Zhiming, director of the Economic Operation Department of China’s Ministry of Information Industry (MII), the establishment of the joint venture is a milestone in the development of TD-SCDMA.

The Chinese government is expected to decide next year which 3G technologies to adopt.
